Story Two

The Missing Island

During my initial site measurement and assessment, I encountered the typical constraints of a working kitchen: the swing radius of the refrigerator door, dishwasher clearance, oven access, and adequate legroom for island seating. The puzzle was fitting all these functional requirements into a cohesive design.

The challenge with this compact kitchen was counterintuitive: it had too much empty space in the center. The homeowner needed additional storage and seating, and it became clear that the underutilized middle of the room was the only viable location.

The solution emerged through a process of space planning the island's dimensions in relation to everything around it. I developed six design iterations, each addressing the competing demands of seating capacity, storage volume, flexibility, and workflow efficiency.

After the client selected their preferred option, we moved forward with finish selections and installation,

transforming the underperforming space into a social hub for the kitchen.
